Can mobile service work continue after the workshop closes?

Keeping a service van does not establish that the old service can continue without the workshop. A call-out may end with a component coming back for machining, cleaning, measurement or further assessment. Those hidden return journeys belong in the decision.

Write the proposed service menu before deciding what equipment to retain. Describe what the customer would receive, whether any work is proposed at the owner’s home and what happens when the problem exceeds the remaining service’s scope.

A fictional retiring owner wants to offer limited diagnosis and advice but stop rebuilding units. Their old customer promise was “we will sort it out”. That wording no longer describes the intended business. They need a narrower offer and a clear route for work they will decline or refer.

Proposed service Question to settle
Initial assessment at a customer site What competence, permission and agreed scope does the task require?
Repair needing workshop facilities Who supplies those facilities, and under what arrangement?
Advice using historic job records What authorised record access remains available?
Work outside the retained capability How is that limit explained before a commitment is made?

Have competent people assess technical tasks and site arrangements. HSE’s competence guidance makes relevant capability central to the work; former experience in a fully equipped workshop does not answer every question about a different setting.

Price the continuing operation in time as well as equipment

List the administration, travel, storage, insurance questions and external support the smaller activity would still need. Ask the accountant and relevant advisers about the actual business structure and arrangements. Do not label it retirement merely because there is no longer a workshop lease.

Check whether the owner wants this pattern of work. A service that can call them away at short notice may conflict with the reason for closing. The retained consultancy boundary helps turn general willingness to help into a defined commitment.

Where another provider would handle repairs, agree how introductions and customer information will work. Do not advertise an external facility as available until the relevant provider and terms have been established.

A design-only continuation is a different option with different deliverables. Compare the actual work, not just the number of machines each option keeps.

When contacting UK Auction Group, distinguish equipment retained for the defined service from surplus workshop assets. Explain any unresolved dependency so it can be considered in the sale discussion. For each retained item, name the continuing task and who will assess its requirements. “It might come in handy” leaves the owner without a defined business reason for keeping it.
