Check calibration availability for the final workshop jobs

The last machining date is a poor date for ending every inspection arrangement. A component may still need measurement, a report may need checking, or a customer may raise a question about the evidence supplied.
Ask the responsible quality person to map measurement demand from the actual open jobs. This is a planning task, not a new calibration policy. Keep the job specification, the business’s quality arrangements and competent technical judgement in charge of what is required.
NPL explains calibration as comparison with reference equipment or samples of known accuracy. Possessing an instrument and possessing appropriate evidence for a particular measurement are therefore different questions. Let the quality lead assess that evidence.
Start with the job, then find the support
For each final job, ask which measurements remain, what report or acceptance evidence was agreed and who can decide that the requirement has been met. Then identify the instruments, people and external services expected to support it.
A fictional final batch needs a dimensional report after an external finishing process. The workshop’s main machining work ends first. If the measuring equipment or competent staff become unavailable before the parts return, the owner has an inspection gap even though the machine shop looks finished.
Record that gap in practical terms:
- Job and required evidence, with the specification reference.
- Expected point when measurement becomes possible.
- Responsible quality contact and required facilities.
- Current calibration or other relevant evidence for that contact to review.
- Decision date for confirming a suitable arrangement.
Avoid setting a universal calibration interval from this list. The correct decision depends on the actual instrument, intended work and applicable quality requirements. If another provider is proposed, ask the quality lead and customer where relevant to assess suitability and agreement.
Preserve the evidence after the measurement
A completed measurement still needs to reach the right job record. Finishing the inspection report prevents the evidence being left on a departing employee’s workstation. CMM programs and results explains why retaining instructions alone may not preserve the actual job outcome.
Check any customer witness appointment against the same support plan. Do not cancel an external service based only on an internal target date if the required event has not yet happened.
Give UK Auction Group a clear account of inspection equipment still in business use and the person who confirms its availability. The disposal conversation can distinguish an item being considered for sale from an item whose final job dependency has been resolved.
Review each row by asking which customer commitment would be affected if that measurement resource disappeared tomorrow. Keep the responsible quality contact’s answer beside the proposed closure date.
