You can prepare for retirement before choosing a date. The useful early work is to understand your preferences and dependencies, without implying that a closure has already been decided.
Start with the parts of the working week you want to change. Is the problem full-time attendance, responsibility for staff, physical work or being the person every customer calls? Different answers may lead to different exit options.
This is a personal direction exercise. A formal investigation of business closure obligations belongs in closure preparation before a decision, where advisers examine the actual business facts.
Keep preparation separate from commitment
You can record what you do, identify where information is stored and describe the owner's role without announcing an exit. You can also make an initial adviser appointment to understand what questions a future decision will require.
Other actions may create commitments or affect people. Giving notice, promising equipment to someone or announcing a closure date needs a different level of consideration. Seek appropriate advice before taking those steps.
A simple two-column page can help. On one side put information you want to understand. On the other put actions that would change someone else's position. Do the first work deliberately; do not let it turn into the second by accident.
Find the information only you can provide
Keep notes on unusual customer arrangements, responsibilities you have never delegated and the reasons certain equipment is still retained. Record uncertainty rather than trying to reconstruct perfect history.
The exercise may reveal that you want less involvement rather than immediate closure. A reduced-hours trial can test that idea when you are ready to discuss it with the people affected.
It may also reveal a firm limit. You might be willing to help a successor for a defined period but unwilling to remain the emergency contact indefinitely. Recording that preference early gives later proposals something honest to work with.
Give the subject a next review
An undated plan still benefits from a date to think again. Choose a review point linked to useful information, such as an adviser conversation or the end of a normal trading cycle. The review is a chance to decide whether you know more, not a requirement to retire.
Use the retirement decision record only for decisions actually made. Keep wishes, options and unresolved questions labelled separately.
When considering whether an asset discussion would be useful yet with UK Auction Group, explain that retirement remains exploratory. Describe the broad operation and what you hope to learn. The conversation can inform later planning without presenting an uncertain intention as a settled sale instruction.
