You may want to think about retirement privately before discussing it widely. That is understandable. It is also worth deciding when private exploration becomes a proposal that affects other people and needs professional advice about communication.

Keep the early facts accurate. If no closure decision has been made, do not describe the business as closing in an enquiry. If an asset sale is only one possibility, say so.

Map the information by purpose

List the people who need information to help you decide: perhaps an accountant, a solicitor or a possible successor. For each, write why they need it and what is relevant to that purpose.

This can prevent oversharing. An early equipment discussion may need the type of operation and broad asset scope, but not personal medical information or detailed employee records.

The first adviser brief gives the decision context. Ask advisers when and how obligations to employees or other parties affect the next stage. Confidential planning does not remove those duties.

Acas explains that employers considering redundancy need to examine the reasons and possible alternatives in its redundancy process guidance. For businesses in Great Britain, use appropriate employment advice before deciding how a closure proposal is communicated. Get jurisdiction-specific advice elsewhere.

Agree what a contact may do

A person receiving information should understand whether you are asking for a private discussion, a site visit or permission to proceed with further work. Do not let an exploratory call be mistaken for an instruction to market assets.

Consider a fictional owner asking for an initial disposal conversation. Their note can state that the retirement route remains under review and that any proposed visit or wider contact should first be agreed. That sets a practical boundary without claiming an absolute guarantee about confidentiality.

Use the enquiry purpose note to make the requested action explicit.

Keep a current account of the position

Prepare a short factual statement for the people authorised to discuss the plan. It should say what is under consideration, what has been decided and who handles questions. Update it when the position changes.

Rumours are difficult to control, but contradictory factual accounts are avoidable. If someone asks a question you cannot yet answer, identify who will follow up rather than inventing reassurance.

The retirement decision record helps distinguish a personal intention from an agreed business action. When contacting UK Auction Group, state the planning stage and the relevant communication limits. That allows a useful asset discussion without presenting an uncertain business future as settled news.
